Lucy Bronze named in sports personality shortlist

THE only footballer to make it onto the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award is World Cup bronze medallist, Lucy Bronze.

The 24-year-old England and Manchester City defender from Alnwick, who is the first female footballer ever to make the final 12, said it was a huge honour to be nominated for the accolade.

She scored the winner against Norway in the last-16, in this year’s World Cup, headed the crucial second goal against host nation Canada in the quarter final and was named in the FIFA All-Star squad after the tournament.

She also helped City finish second in FA WSL 1 and qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

She took to Twitter to write: “What an honour! I may not win..But in being nominated I know we did our job #InspireANation”

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place at the SSE Arena in Belfast on Sunday 20 December.
