Candle & Bell filmmaker is on fire after working with Maggie Gyllenhaal

AWARD-winning filmmaker Kat Wood is writing and directing a new movie set in Newcastle after recently working with Hollywood actress Maggie Gyllenhaal.

As a professional screenwriter, Kat from Yarm, Stockton, directed her first short film, Home, earlier this year.

Starring Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal, and produced by the legendary Kevin Spacey, it won Kat (pictured above with Maggie) the Jameson First Shot Competition – making her the first UK recipient of this coveted directing award.

She is now back in her native North-East to work with local production company Candle & Bell on its debut feature film Stine, a sci-fi movie.

It is being developed with the support of national creative development agency Creative England’s Emerging Talent Fund via the BFI NET.WORK.

“I love genre films and sci-fi in particular, so to be able to bring a sci-fi project to life in the North East where I grew up is something I’m very passionate about.”

Kat and producer Maria Caruana Galizia who founded Candle & Bell first met two years ago on the BFI NET.WORK’S ‘Making the Leap’ talent development programme – a series of networking and learning events for Northern-based producers, writers and directors preparing to make their first feature film.

Kat and Maria discovered they both shared a passion for great genre stories, and have been looking to partner up since.

Kat said: “To have Creative England fund the development of Stine is a great indicator of their belief in not only the project, but also in Maria and I as we embark on making our first feature film a reality.

With a background in broadcast journalism, her first produced film, Mr Bojagi, won the Best Short Film Award at the London Independent Film Festival and in 2012, she was a finalist for the Bluecat Cordelia Award and Final Draft Big Break competition with a script written with her writing partner.

A John Brabourne Awardee 2016, Kat was voted on to The Tracking Board’s ‘young and hungry’ list 2014, which lists the top 100 emerging writers in Hollywood and is voted for by industry professionals.

She currently has three feature scripts under option and her first produced feature, Arthur & Merlin was released in the UK and US at the end of last year.

Maria, who began her career as an assistant editor for Scottish Television on Taggart and has freelanced on Game of Thrones added: “When Kat first sent me her ideas for Stine I knew it was a film I had to produce. She has proven herself as a talented writer and Candle & Bell is tremendously proud and excited to be working with her on her directorial debut.”
