England women’s volleyball team hits region before major competition
ENGLAND women’s senior volleyball team found their form at Middlesbrough College recently, ahead of success on the international stage.
The top national women’s team called at the college to prepare for the 12th Annual European Global Challenge in Croatia – a major fixture of the international volleyball calendar.
David Goodchild, head of Middlesbrough College’s sports academy MC SPORT, is also head coach of the England team – and brought his squad of 14 to the college for a training camp.
Students from the college’s physiotherapy courses supported the women with treatment as David put them through their paces ahead of the tournament.
He said: “It’s great that we can bring top sporting teams like the England women’s senior volleyball squad to use the facilities at Middlesbrough College.
“The training camp was an important part of our preparation before the team went to Croatia, and it also provided the students with a great opportunity to observe and in some cases hone their skills.
“Middlesbrough College’s Sports Academy has some of the best facilities in the business – and hosting the team is recognition of that.”
This year is the first time in nine years there has been an England volleyball squad, as previously Great Britain fielded teams.
Two London 2012 Olympians – Ciara Michel and Grace Carter – form part of this year’s squad.
David, who was assistant head coach to the women’s Team GB side in the 2012 Olympics, added: “Volleyball is gaining popularity all the time, and the North East has a particularly strong record.
“I hope some of the Middlesbrough College students are encouraged to try the sport after seeing the training camp.”
The European Global Challenge is being staged in the southern Croatian city of Pula.
England’s ladies have already won matches against Russia and the USA’s Southeastern conference.
They are now set to play for a place in the quarter finals of the competition.
Earlier this year 39 young athletes from MC SPORT secured places at the Association of Colleges National Finals – a major, British inter-college sporting competition.
MC SPORT was created in 2012 to deliver a first class sporting environment, offering young athletes top-level coaching and a range of top quality support including nutrition advice and physiotherapy.
