Infra-red sauna is hot new trend with health benefits

Instead of sweating it out in the gym, a new sauna at Naturel Therapies in Warden, near Hexham is helping people shape up by sitting down and relaxing.

It is one of the first venues in the North-East to install an infra-red sauna which claims to boost the immune system as well as help with pain relief, weight loss and relaxation.

“Infra-red saunas are not only the current must-have treatment in London’s therapy centres but are also being used successfully by doctors, athletes and even astronauts,” said Zena Gibson, who started Naturel Therapies at The Old Chapel with husband Simon 12 years ago.

“The infra-red light penetrates human tissue and helps to lower blood pressure, increase blood circulation, relieve pain and even reduce cellulite. The sauna can help you burn up to 800 calories in a 30 minute session and promote deep cleansing by flushing out around 20 per cent of the body’s toxins, in comparison to about five per cent in an ordinary sauna.

“They are being used to help with back problems, arthritis, to increase flexibility or simply for relaxation. It is ideal for people who don’t like the high heat of an ordinary sauna as the temperature can be reduced and precisely controlled without losing any of the effects,” she added.

The new sauna suite is the first part of a planned investment and expansion this year for Naturel Therapies, which also operates at the George Hotel in Chollerford. The Centre has a growing client list of men and women, with its team of five offering more than 30 different treatments from a range of massages, with a special bed available for Mums-to-be, to physiotherapy, facials and manicures.

The new separate sauna suite, with its relaxation chairs, shower and kitchen facilities, is already a hit with individuals of all ages as well as groups from mothers and daughters to sports buddies and friends relaxing after work. A range of packages that can include the sauna and other selected treatments along with refreshments from coffee and sweet treats to bottles of bubbly are also popular.

“We have wonderful loyal clients who come from right across Tynedale, Newcastle and the Carlisle area as well as regular visitors from London,” said Zena. “They value the range of treatments and the peaceful surroundings as The Old Chapel is set in lovely countryside with parking at the door.

“We are all about relaxation, natural products and treatments that help people to improve their well-being and escape the pressures of work, family demands and technology. We are committed to keeping abreast of new treatments and investing in them and in regular training for the whole team.”

Use of the infra-red sauna room costs £20 per person for up to an hour with a course of six costing £105 and various packages available. Details from Naturel Therapies on 01434-608998 or
