SPRING cleaning is daunting for most of us but what if you’ve 40 beds to make? As head housekeeper at Jesmond Dene House hotel in Newcastle for 11 years, Linda Collins reveals her top tips and her dream labour-saving device.

How many staff are in your department?

Fifteen.

Does all of Jesmond Dene House get Spring cleaned on top of its usually daily blitz?

Yes, we do a monthly deep clean, where an attendant will get one of her bedrooms to clean as a deep clean which includes high dusting and behind furniture and beds.

What are the major jobs? 

Blinds, top curtains, high dusting, under bed, behind furniture.

Jesmond Dene House is has very high ceilings in the hall – how are they cleaned?

Maintenance will use high ladders to do all high dusting the girls can’t reach.

Which are the fiddliest jobs to do?

Small square shelves in unit which holds tea/coffee.

As the building is so old do you have to be careful about not using certain chemicals?

We only use hot water and detergent on the wood panels in the Great Hall.

What are your top three Spring cleaning tips?

Always keep on top of things, break bigger jobs throughout the months, during warmer days get plenty fresh air through your home.

Have you discovered any natural remedies over the years?

White wine is good for removing red wine if caught quickly, Bicarbonate soda and white vinegar also good for removal of bad smells and stubborn stains.

What are the main areas of the home readers should concentrate on when Spring cleaning?

I would say areas that are hard to reach or hidden away, as they will be missed the most so will harbour the more dust.

Do you enjoy cleaning at home after a day of doing it at work?

Yes, I hate clutter and love clean areas with plenty space.

Do you think that you would ever have a cleaner?

No, I would only have to clean before they came and check over what they’d done.

If you could invent one labour-saving cleaning device, what would it be?
Tile grout cleaner.
