Newborns and new dawns for dads

NEW mums can have a partner or relative to stay in hospital with them overnight from October 1.

As part of a three month trial, the postnatal ward (ward 17) at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough will welcome the birth partner or one nominated companion of each new mum overnight.

A comfy chair will be provided and anybody staying is welcome to bring their own pillow and blanket.

The trial will allow relatives to take part in caring for mother and baby and support family bonding, as well as reducing anxiety and stress amongst mothers.

Stephanie Worn, postnatal ward manager, said: “By enabling a companion to stay overnight, we hope to promote a positive start to your new relationship and your new family role.

“We recognise this is an important time for you and your companion to feel supported and to prepare you for when you are ready for home.”

The decision to have a relative staying overnight is entirely up to the new mum and her family.
