VIDEO: Happy first birthday Express North magazine!
Express North‘s birthday – it’s turned one!HE week the children go back to school is even more joyous for me now as it’s also when I can celebrate
What started as an idea to launch an online women’s page has spiralled across social media platforms to create an online community that truly celebrates the achievements of inspirational women in the North-East. And, I felt that was long overdue.
The business press was predominantly male, middle-aged and suity and women were too often featured purely because of their looks. I was tired of standing in line at Boots with my meal deal, gazing absent-mindedly at the tabloid magazines with front pages dominated by unflattering photos of celebrities on holidays snapped unaware or brazen kiss and tells. I stared at these so often I began to think it was normal but it’s not – it’s bullying by osmosis. And as the mum of a daughter, now 11, who is already far too preoccupied with taking selfies, that really worried me.
I wanted to create a blog that was new and innovative, mainly written by a journalist, with just as high editorial standards as professionally produced publications.
So in 12 months the magazine has shared the stories of more than 280 women. Which is amazing! Thank you if you’ve been in it, written a guest blog post, submitted an article, read it and shared it.
You get it.
There’s lots I’ve learnt this past year about myself (I don’t like working at home on my own) about how to start a business (order gorgeous business cards and don’t overstretch yourself with overheads you might not need in the long run) and how to step into the unknown and slowly build a brand (surround yourself with supportive people in the industry and Google has the answer to almost everything).
I’ve filmed a video which explains the highs and lows I’ve experienced over the past twelve months, if you make it to the end it mentions special competitions I’m starting later this week to thank you for all your support.
When I launched Express North last year (details on the ‘about’ page) I said that immortal lines by Dirty Dancing’s Johnny Castle compelled me to finally take the plunge….and, a year on, I’m still having the time of my life!
