The writing’s on the wall – first online gallery launching for women artists

NORTH-East entrepreneur Victoria Anderson is creating the first online gallery exclusively for female artists.

Her vision is in direct response to stark figures released in last year’s Representation of Women Artists report which showed that just 31 per cent of artists are female in London-based galleries, while only 40 per cent of artists represented in galleries across Britain are women.

The scene is similar for big art prizes too –  since The Turner Prize was set up in 1984, only five of the 31 Turner Prize winners have been women.

“Of course I wish there wasn’t a need for a gender-specific place for artists; but until there’s true equality it’s not an option.”

As Managing Director of Art Evolution, Victoria said: “The statistics speak for themselves. Just as in the corporate world, discrimination towards women affects the art industry.

“It’s my mission to help women artists in Northumberland, the UK and further afield, to promote and sell their artwork online in an environment where they feel confident, comfortable, and empowered.”

“Spreading the message that women are as valuable as men in art, as well as in business and in any other part of life, is vital.”

Art Evolution was set up 14 years ago with the ambition to break the barriers that people encounter when choosing and buying artwork, and to make it fun, affordable and free from intimidation and elitism.

North-East based artist and illustrator, Zoe Emma Scott, who recently joined Art Evolution, explained: “I was delighted to be invited to exhibit my work online with Art Evolution. Female artists are still hugely under represented and Victoria’s decision to have an all-female forum for us to showcase our work is meeting a real need.”

Victoria added: “Our business ethos hasn’t changed but our focus is now firmly set to help female artists. Of course I wish there wasn’t a need for a gender-specific place for artists; but until there’s true equality it’s not an option.

“Spreading the message that women are as valuable as men in art, as well as in business and in any other part of life, is vital. I’m very excited to offer the perfect way to recognise and celebrate the stunning work that female artists are creating.”
