You little beauty – owner of award-winning Bel Viso reveals her secrets of success
HER primary school teacher had faith in her launching her own business and five years after opening Bel Viso it’s been crowned North-East beauty salon of the year at the English Hair & Beauty Awards. Samantha Lindsley (pictured right, above) explains which huge trend is going nowhere fast and why she’s trying to slow down.
What did you want to be growing up?
I don’t really remember, but I have a card from when I left primary school from my teacher asking me to send her a price list for my beauty salon when I opened it! So I guess I must have always aspired to be a beauty therapist and own my own beauty salon
When did you start in the beauty industry and why did you want to open your own salon?
I started straight from school where I went to Middlesbrough College and trained as an apprentice beauty therapist and always wanted to own my own business .
Have qualifications got you where you are, has it been sheer hard work and talent or a combination?
I would say it has been a combination of both that has got me here as without my qualifications I wouldn’t be a beauty therapist but I would say it’s hard work that has help me build up Bel Viso.
Have the treatments you offer changed over the years?
Yes, we as a salon have continued to grow our treatment list throughout the years to keep up with the ever-changing beauty industry but one treatment that has grown along the way with us is our love for High Definition Brows.
What do you think will be the next big beauty trend?
I’m not really sure as I feel that it’s all about the brows at the moment and has been for a few years now and can’t see it changing any time soon. Everyone is brow crazy.
Do you feel pressure to be a role model to your staff and others dreaming of setting up their own successful salon?
Yes I love talking to other girls within the beauty industry as I think it’s good to be able to help each other as I feel we all will have tackled different problems along the way and feel we can help encourage and advise each other.
What effect has social media had on your business?
I feel social media is a fab tool for my business and I love using it to promote our work salon and advise on all networks available and also to interact with our clients.
What is a very underrated business skill?
Time-keeping and organisation.
What’s the one piece of advice you would tell someone wanting to open up their own beauty salon?
Believe in yourself.
Which three people (alive/dead, celebrity or not) would you like invite to your salon so you could get your hands on their brows?
Nilam Holmes-Patel the owner and founder of High Definition Brows as would be an honour to do the lady herself, Beyonce and Lauren Goodger.
What’s one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?
That I started the business at just 21-years-old.
Bel Viso was crowned English Hair & Beauty Awards North-East beauty salon of the year 2016 – you must be absolutely thrilled! What do you think makes Bel Viso so special and sets you apart from the competition?
Our customer service and the fact we give all clients a warm, friendly welcome.
Do you let yourself take a moment to step back and enjoy what you’ve achieved?
Hmm maybe not as much as I should, I never stop! I can’t imagine slowing down. I worry what I would do with the extra time if I did take a step back but this is something I’m currently trying to learn how to achieve.
